Mawile the Futakuchi-onna

Greetings little monsters, welcome back to the ‘wonderful’ world of Pokémon. Today I will take a look at another pokémon and look at it’s abilities , skills and mostly it’s mythological inspiration. Today we discuss one of my least favorite pokémon of my favorite type. Mawile! The deceiver Pokémon.

Mixed emotions

The fact that this pokémon is one of my lesser loved ones among the fairy types doesnt mean it is not a good pokémon. In fact Mega-Mawile, introduced in the sixth generation,  can be quite good. However here lays my problem with this little monster, it really does need it’s mega stone to be good. This means you kind of have to run it as a mega set, in order to make it live up to any potential or for it to have solid stats. While Mega-Venusaur and Mega-Garchomp for example feel much more .. optional, with a lot of potential ways to play the pokemon. Mawile in its regular form just has its physical traits going for it the rest of it’s stats really are quite bad. It is an interesting typing though. It’s fairy typing covers it’s steel typings weakness to fighting moves and the steel part gives the fairy part of it an immunity to it’s poison weakness. In fact Mawile resists ten out of eighteen typings and is immune to two besides that. That means two thirds of all typings can not hit it effectively.  On paper this would make the little lady like pokémon a good defensive pokémon, unfortunately it’s weaknesses are ground types and fire types which are very common moves and a lot of pokémon can learn elemental punches, bites or even earthquake. You can not equip it with an air balloon to negate this because it does really need to hold its mega stone.

It is a nice pokémon to nuzlocke with but for a regular playthrough or competitive play it is quite lacking. It’s design is good, it has some creepy elements to it as well as some cute, which is meant to be part of it’s design , yet I can not help to feel like it should evolve somehow. It is just a bit too basic for a non evolving pokémon. The mega evolution fixed that but at the cost of giving it an item. While it does learn some decent moves, it only starts learning those past level 33 and up to level 49 and even then it’s just really has one viable way to build. So all in all , while a useful pokémon, I would not particularly call it charming. There is little room for playing around.

Design

While I already went over how it’s design looks just looks a bit to basic let’s talk about it some more , but this time we also take into account what the makers want it to be. It’s backstory and all those qualities which can explain why a pokémon looks the way it does.  It’s design is based on depictions of the japanese entity called a Futakuchi-onna, whom we will talk about more in the next ‘chapter’ but basically it is woman with a mouth in the back of her head. When we look at Mawile we can clearly see the mouth is not in the back of her head but actually is in the back of her hair.  However Mawile can be both genders, which is a bit odd given it’s inspiration can exclusively be feminine, it is explained that what we see as hair is actually a steel horn, to explain it’s steel typing. The fairy typing was only added after generation VI (Kalos) so before that it was just a pure steel type. Perhaps this is partially why I do not like Mawile as much, it just doesn’t feel like a steel type , with what it was based on a dark type would have made so much more sense. But I guess Hoenn , the region it originated must have needed some additional steel types or something.. because I can not see a relation to most of its lore.. the only thing is the steel horn thing which feels forced.

Nani?! That is ONE weird steel horn Gamefreak!

Mawile is being described as the deceiver, it lulls pokémon or people into a false sense of security  with it’s cute face before turning around and beginning to chomp on them with it’s bigger mouth. The bigger mouth can not taste anything so it will eat anything just to get enough sustenance, the mouth can even chew through iron beams.  Weirdly enough Mawile doesn’t get the Strong Jaw ability. It can learn intimidate.. which makes sense cause it is scary as hell to see such a mouth, or Hyper Cutter (an ability that prevents abilities from being lowered) which also makes sense.. because it deceives making people think the cute part is the actual monster while it kinda actually is the mouth that is in control. It’s hidden ability (you can get by transferring)  make it a lot more impressive fighting wise and symbolise it’s sheer determination to eat and nothing else. This pokemon just wants to consume. Many dex-entries warn for how extremely dangerous a Mawile can be. The egg coloured body looks cute while the mouth does look quite ferocious so they do a good job at that at least but you get the sense there is more. We see that more when it Mega-Evolves.

Mawile says! ‘Eat your vegies kids!’

Mega-Mawile looks a bit more feminine than i it’s base form, her dress has now been given multiple colours and the hair mouth has now become two even more evil looking twin tales. It’s ability now becomes Huge Power, which doubles its physical attack stats that now has ridden to an already quite impressive 105. Compared to regular Mawiles 85, that is quite an increase. This makes Mega Mawile quite good in fact, at least in the ‘useful’ sense of the word. Alignment wise this pokémon seems to be quite evil. The pokédex says the mouths have become extremely vicious after transforming and now use one mouth to catch their prey in while the other mouth tries to rip them apart.  The mouth seem to be able to fight over the food. Imagine that two T-Rex scene from Jurassic Park the lost world but on a cute girly pokémon with a pokemon in between two of her three mouths instead. Yikes! A single gash from them is said to be able to turn a boulder into dust. Not so cute after all, but hey if you ever want your Porygon2 to be two Porygon2 we know whom to mega-evolve.

Yokai

Now let’s see how much Mawile looks at its inspiration the Futakuchi-Onna. I was looking for a way to abbreviate this  but somehow Futa seemed like a bad choice. There are to many other onna’s so I will refer to them as ‘ladies’ from now on. This lady is a yokai , not that weird anime with the orange cat that is sort of like pokémon but ancient japanese folk-tales.  Like I said earlier they are women who have transformed , while sources differ on their origin all seem to have a theme of neglect of something. Depriving something of someone.

As far as we know the transformation to this demonlike state can happen for three particular reasons. First of all a woman can become a Futakuchi-Onna  if she neglects taking care (step)children. In one of the oldest tales there is woman of moderate wealth who is very stingy despite being off well enough.  She has a child of her own she keeps well fed. However she refuses to spend money on her stepchild allowing to to die of starvation. The kid’s spirit becomes a spirit of vengeance attaching to to the head of the lady’s actual daughter. You can probably guess where the story goes from there. As the stingy woman transforms from sinner to dinner. The trickster part of the mythologie seems to come from this part of the myth and possibly part of their design too. Mawile looks quite cute and young, hairstyles are either twintails or a single ponytail which I usually associate with something young and cute. Since mawile uses it’s cuteness it could very well be the spirit of a child that their mother let starve to death or something in a similar vein.

The second possibility to become a ‘lady’ is to neglect your own need for food. Woman starving themselves to look good can turn into the yokai over time. It is said that at one point during their hunger they can feel their skull splitting while new lips and a mouth begin to form. A mouth that needs twice as much food as the ‘main’ chomper. This new mouth is perfectly capable of feeding itself having control of the vessels hair. It oftenly whispers hateful or spiteful things to the vessel to make it more meek to its own wishes or simply manipulate it, usually not in a charming way though.  The second mouth in nearly every source talks you down, never up. A lot of elements from this version can also be seen in Mawile, the way that the hair is being depicted as the dominant side, the pokédex entry that the second mouth doesn’t taste so Mawile uses that one to get enough food even if it doesnt like it. It hits the tones of the lady being forced to eat twice as much. The malicious character of the second mouth has also been shown in the Pokémon adventures Manga where a Mawile body got in conflict with her hair. The ability Hyper Cutter and intimidate seem to fit this form quite good as well.

The demon’s food must be Condoleezza Rice

The third and clearly less documented way to get your skull to split and form a mouth is by not speaking your mind. Women who hide their true feelings can form a mouth that will spout any idea you have going inside that big brain of yours. I do not think Mawile has any connection with this type of the lady. At best we could argue that as a deceiver she never shows her real mind but that feels a bit flimsy, especially when  food and eating plays such a big part in her story. Then again.. maybe Mawile was once a girl that once starved because she wasn’t taken care off, starting out as a ghost pokémon trying to tell people what happened to her she failed and thusly grew her ‘metal horn’ now she is hungry for more.

This is why we women never shut up! We grow demons otherwise!

Whatever it is I am pretty safe from becoming a ‘lady’  myself. I love food and cooking way to much to go too malnourished, even when lacking money I try to be creative to produce at least some kind of meal. I always speak my mind, even when it might not be that appropriate my opinion is who I am and should I prematurely die I do not want you to know the woman I pretended to me but the Pinkie I truly am. I would however starve children cause I am really not into them. Luckily I will never want or get children myself so there is no one to starve. (Don’t worry I won’t let a random kid starve I would buy him a krentenbol, that’s a raisin bun. I guess from the Pokémon Mawile and the lady we learn to take care of yourself, those around you and to speak your mind when something is troubling you. Troubling like seeing a pokémon bisected by mega-mawiles gaping maws, or even myself.  I’ll go catch a mawile now, nickname it Lisa, mega evolve it and let it eat me. Just so I can yell ‘You are tearing me apart Lisa’…. for the memes.

Question to my readers:

Have you seen: Tommy Wisseau’s the room?

Let me know your answer in the comments. Now it is time for this professor to take a nap.  Though I might grab a little snack first. Takling about devouring has made me kind of peckish. Not really in my stomach.. just a feeling you know, a little gnaw in the back of my head.

Rowlet the Owl Pokémon

Salutations my tiny monstrosities welcome to the 33rd week of the year. As we are drawing closer to the end of the summer vacation season, it is time to take a little vacation together. A trip to both Hawaii and Alola as we look at the adorable Pokémon that has become an icon for a big group of bloggers who symbolise something very important to me.  The Otaku Warriors for Liberty and Self-respect or OWLS for short! A big shout out to you guys and your amazing cause! This is a little something about their avatar, and one of my favorite starters of all times.

A little problem solver

Alola as most people know is a Pokémon Region based on hawaii. We could start with the fire kitten Litten, the pink nosed singing seal Popplio or the adorable little owl Rowlet.

It’s name very simply comes from a combination from round and owlett.  As it’s a round baby owl this of course makes perfect sense. Yet people sometimes question if Rowlet does belong. The Tytonidae species that Rowlet seems to be based on isn’t  native to the islands of Hawaii after all. Though loved as a pokemon people really questioned if it belonged there.
Well the answer is yes. The Tytonidae species, also known as the Barn Owl has been important to the volcanic islands to take care of a rat infestation there. Much like the mongoose, which  Yungoos is based on the barn owl settled into Hawaii after. People still say it doesn’t belong , yet it keeps a much bigger problem away. Though it might be a stranger unlike the local wildlife, much like Rowlet seems to be.. or the people the OWLS fight for , it has found its place in the lands. It may not always be loved ..but without those barn owls, without rowlett that land would suffer through much worse. It’s Pokédex entry mostly stays true to  the regular owl but mentions that the owl uses photosynthesis during the day to fuel it’s night time hunts.

A reversal of fate

The little owl’s evolutionary line is filled with some fascinating facts and and titillating trivia. As Rowlet begins to evolve it becomes increasingly rare in terms of species and type of owls. Dartrix it’s first evolution is based on the Peoh owl.

An owl that IS in fact  from the place the Alola region is based upon. Dartrix is being described as a bit of a dandy and a narcissist in the Pokédex it is incredibly sensitive to the presence of others as well as an excellent marksman with it’s darts. Looking at the Peoh though we can see a dramatic shift in tone for the fate of the owl. Where Rowlet is very common but unwanted, Dartrix or the Peoh is quite accepted but endangered. The reason for that is because it’s a bit of a sickly owl that is extremely vulnerable to pollution, which is shown by Dartrix grass typing having a weakness for the poison type. Dartrix and the other Peoh are dying out because of the arrival of humankind. Even though humans accept the peoh they refuse to change their ways or to adapt so they can live alongside each other. Where Rowlet shows us that times change and we have to accept that sometimes rather than alienating the new, Dartrix teaches us that it’s not enough to accept something in our lives we have to always adapt a bit to it too , otherwise it can still die out.

A tragedy completed

When Dartrix evolves in Decidueye it loses it’s flying type in favor of a ghost type. Given that we seen  the bird from common to endangered already we can predict what this means of the owl Decidueye is based on. Indeed, the stilt owl has gone extinct. It has never been discovered by a scientist  while alive. These birds lived on the island before mammals and their predators were a common presence. They hunted birds, mostly sea-birds (once again justifying it’s grass typing as grass is super effective against grass)  which is reflected by Decidueye’s design looking like an archer/ranger.

When mankind came to the islands they brought cattle with them like pigs that seemed to have preyed on these birds, but something else preyed on them as well namely Polynesian rats. Having evolved purely for combatting other birds the stilt bird had no answer to these and was thus wiped out by  the plague humans brought along in the first place. These rats formed so much of a problems in the later days they had to bring in Barn Owls (and thus Rowlet) to combat the problem that they started in the first place, and now that same life form for solving THEIR problem. The thing that killed Decidueye was the same thing Rowlet was brought in here to fight. Completing a circle of owls and highlighting the faults of man. Decidueye can be a metaphor of not being acknowledged at all, mankind just imposed their standards on the new land not knowing what was best being ignorant of how life truly works.  Just like how many cultures adhere to binary systems, only one system can be right how there is only one true god or whatever limitations society imposes upon the world. Decidueye is stated to cool and cautious but that is prone to panic attacks when caught/spotted though. They like to live more withdrawn and hidden and pull up their hoods when they are under high pressure. A feeling most of us oddballs or shut-ins would be able to relate to i’d think. Unfortunately I can’t shoot a pebbled from a mile away so.. I am unable completely relate to it after all.

Mythology is a hoot!

So now that we have looked at the complete line of evolutions let’s take a look at owls in Hawaii in general.  They are of significant importance to their classic culture. The owl is actual somewhat of a sacred animal to the natives. The owl in its wisdom is said to be a sort of guide. You are lucky when you see an owl because it will watch over you and protect you.
The owl to the natives is like a guardian angel that watches over you. It is also the patron of lost souls, helping them face their demons throughout their journey. Rowlet in the anime , though more comical seems to also be a guide for Ash, like most of his scouts but nonetheless it seems to meet the brief.   It’s such a good owl!

The hawaiian god Kane also seemed to have an owl form to protect its own. So indeed the owl is a warrior of justice and there even is a theme of self respect to find in the pokémon’s evolutionary line, although a bit tragic. We start out with Rowlet which basically only comes out in the dark, but when it evolves it gets its pride and shows itself to the world, however when it evolves again, it has learned to become more cautious and cool, it has learned how this world works and how it manages to function it. Thus I’d say Rowlet is the perfect symbol for the OWLS bloggers and a beautiful pokémon from which we can learn some lessons if we do not what to repeat our mistakes. Though the Rowlet->Dartrix->Decidueye evolution seems a bit circular in nature. It might not be so easy to reach those goals for people to accept, adept and account for others than them. Perhaps some brave bloggers out there can make sure it will still get it’s mega-evolution. One that can lose the hood with pride.

Thusly we end a bit of a different analysis of a Pokémon. Looking a bit more behind a pokémon than just directly at it. Talking a bit more about a subject that lies close to my heart as well. I do hope you still enjoyed the post. As my health seems to falter a bit I hope I can keep bringing some nice content this week. Should I miss a day now you know why. What Pokémon would you like to see me take a look at? Let me know in the comments and remember:
I am not weird, just very pink!
Until we read again!

Norse Mythology in Pokémon

Jolly good, an avid reader has arrived to assist me in this matter.  Let me first do you the courtesy of a formal introduction, even though the keenest and eager of minds might have already spotted me on the ABOUT page of this blogging endeavour.
My name is detective:  Pinkelett Wellington-Oxley-Birminghamshire-Diggersby-Pinkerton-Cherrlyblossom. Feel free to call me Detective Pinkie though! Together with my trusted Ditto called Evidence we solve mysteries, deduce theories and analyse enigma’s.
Unlike the former crudely called ‘Theory-Thursdays’  I shall not only discuss theories but rumors as well. Today however we for an hypothesis about the identity of the final legendary in Pokémon Sword and Shield and for that we will look at  Norse mythology. Are you ready little Watsons? Let us take a trip across the bifrost.

Kalos and Galar

My utmost apologies, before we can depart I must relay some factoids about Pokémon topography. For the sake of logical deduction one should know that different Pokémon regions are based on different countries. Their geographical location in the Pokémon world oftenly mirrors the once in the real world. Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh (as well as the islands from minor games like pokémon snap)  are all based on Japan and thusly are described as being close to one another. Unova was our first trip to another country! Mimicking the american east coast. New York and New Jersey are referenced in this region and the region is to be described as very far away from the original four. Alola was based on Hawaii and is assumed to be relatively close to Unova though the island theming and vastly different culture makes his hard to deduce. The Alola region in fact was so different and secluded from the rest of the world it felt like it’s very own world.  Kalos was, not so subtle based on france. This games legendaries featured a lot of nordic elements which seem to return in Sword and Shield. Galar which is even more obviously being based on Britain by process of extrapolation of the trend should be very close to Kalos, in fact their maps do seem to be connectable.

Fan theories state we might venture into the 6th generation region, last time two railways connected we could travel across the lands as well after all! Safe to say if the player can cross the border, it would not be that hard for it’s mythos to do the same.
Most legendaries have  an important role in shaping their respective regions as well, so it could be possible that Arceus created these legendaries together, but over time these lands segregated. With that being said let’s take a peek at some mythology. We will start in Kalos first. Where all legendaries seem to be inspired by this picture! But also have a much deeper connection. Keep this pictue in your mind Watsons you will need it.

Yggdrasil and Xerneas

At first glance you would not directly connect this:

and this:

However truth lies a layer deeper within my Watsons! If we look we can certainly see a mimicking in the colour pattern from Yggdrasill towards Xerneas but that is not the only evidence. Yggdrasil is the life tree. Xerneas pokédex entry calls it the Life Pokémon. Which in it’s dormant state in fact is a tree. Although not as massive and world connecting. Xerneas is described as a small blue true connected to the very essence of life. A life tree if you will.

Now before you yell out that this still is poppycock let us move a bit further into the northern mythology itself. Yggdrasil is not just a tree it also has some animal friends living inside and around it. Four of these magnificent creatures are called Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór These creatures are all deer that feed of the branches of Yggdrasil. Much like Xerneas all these deers are stags and they all wear gems in their antlers. Much like Xerneas. These colours are Red, blue, yellow, and purple, all these are represented in Xerneas design. While Xerneas uses his gems he has to power to grant things everlasting life.

Hræsvelgr and Yveltal

Though it is not too  hard to see, the eagle sitting in the world tree in Yveltal it’s connections go quit a bit deeper then it just being an eagle.

First of all the eagle in the life tree as depicted in the image shared above is rumored to be blind. It is not hard so see an aspect of blindness in Yveltal. It’s eyes are a completely evil blue, while design trends really focussed at that time of bringing eyes to live a lot more. Pokémon almost always had pupils, with only extreme rare exceptions. and those usually just being hidden.  Yveltal’s empty eyes could easily hint at it being blind. Yet Hræsvelg is not that eagle in the tree so why bring it up? This giant in the form of an Eagle, is known as the corpse eater. Yveltal is the Pokémon of death. Some people even claim that Hræsvelgr actually IS the eagle in the life tree, but this is up for debate.  The Eagle in the life tree has the ability to peer into ones soul and this ability is never found in mentions of Hræsvelgr nor is something like this hinted at in Yveltal’s pokédex lore.
However since there isn’t much officially know about these two it makes sense to combine them. The Corpse Eater is is sit to dwell at the end of the world. The player in Pokémon Y encounters Yveltal when it is about to end the world as they know it, when Lysandre uses it to empower his doomsday weapon to destroy all life.

Níðhǫggr Jörmungandr and Zygarde

At the bottom of the tree we see a snake in its roots. This snake is Níðhǫggr, who is more accurately described as a dragon who lives under ground in the roots of the life tree. Zygarde’s typing is a ground dragon type, so that makes sense. Yet Zygarde has many forms and these aren’t just tacked on.. these are also very much rooted in Nordic mythology.  Lets begin with the serpentine form.

This seems to be based on Jörmungandr. This snake was thrown into earth ocean by Odin, and apparently it was very good at playing snake because there it grew tall enough to loop the world and bite its own tail. This apparently brought good tidings to Midgar or in other words earth where staying like that keeps our world safe. Should the snake however ever let o Midgar will fall to disarray and be destroyed Zygarde is the order  Pokémon, it’s tasked is to prevent our ecosystem from collapsing and maintain balance.  Thus the Midgard-snake and the Order Pokémon share a purpose in life.
The fact that Zygarde kan grow is also a reference to this origin. However to his other two forms we need to look at his father first. No it’s not Tom Hiddleston.. it’s the actual Loki… who did some very weird things.

Angrboða and Loki must have been at the daycare together at one point, because it was said that they liked to play together.  Three new lives where bred. Jormungandr, Hel and Fenrir. A snake.. a half undead giant woman.. and a dog/wolf.  10% Zygarde being a doglike creature is fairly obvious and there isn’t much of a deeper connection to the wolf there anyway.
With Hel it gets a bit more interesting in the design department.  Too human pokémon have oftenly be met with dislike or even hate and controversy. I am looking at you Jynx! So they had to be a bit creative. Hel is mostly know for three things. Being the giantess that rules over norse hell is one. Zygarde does not rule over any afterlife ..but it took snakes role anyway.

So let’s see if our target looks like a giant. Check on that. 100% For Zygarde is definitely a giant. The second is her spiky crown. marvel kind of exaggerated it..but we can definitely see a spiky crown on zygarde as well. Finally one half of  Hel is living, the other is dead. Though we don’t see a half rotting earth giant in Zygarde 100% on one half of it’s “cloak” it dons the main colour of Xerneas.. being life.. the other half of features Yveltal’s colour .. being death. I would say these are all strong enough connections to be more than just a coincidence. But how about Galar. We do not know a lot about those yet.. what is your theory? Well it is my believe Zamazenta and Zacian are based on Freki and Geri.

The Wolves and the Raven.

Zamazenta the shield wolf and Zacian the sword wielding lobo were announced to be the legendaries of Pokémon Sword and Shield. With some people immediately comparing them to Skoll and Hati, the wolves who chase the sun and the moon, I feel other then thematically following after Pokémon Sun and Moon there is not a lot to this reference, They might be used to deduced secondary typings, as we have clearly seen Nintendo crossing figures before to deduce typings and lore alike.  Geri and Freki are Odin’s pet wolves.

Where X and Y used the icon of Yggdrasil to base legendaries around, when reusing mythos again you’d need an equally strong icon. One like Odin himself. In the art shared we see the wolves sitting at both sides of his throne. One sits by his sword, the other by his shield Their names roughly translating to something insatiable, always hungry, ever eager to satisfy themselves. With a bit of good will from us,  and some free interpretation of their names we get a unstoppable force and an unmovable object. A perfect theming that seems to work excellent for the route Nintendo and Game Freak chose. Though Hati and Skoll are not out of the running yet, a pretty much confirmed leak has revealed there will be a third, and evil legendary.  Based on this imagine and the accompanying lore we could assume the third legendary, will be a two headed raven, wielding a spear. Huginn and Muninn were Odin’s messengers and scouts relaying him all sorts of information thusly being sometimes being connected to the virtues of knowledge and wisdom, even omniscience.  This could make Huginn and Muninn the inspiration for a pokémon representing the all knowing mind. Giving us a nice trinity: the unstoppable, the unmovable and the all knowing. This may just be speculation, but if we remember Sword and Shields first trailer  when Zacian and Zamazenta where facing off suddenly something else approached…from the sky!

We may have not gathered enough evidence yet for a conviction..but at least we have a suspect.  A good detective always has a theory. Haven examined the evidence yourself my dear Watsons, what do you think will be the third legendary? What are you hoping for?
Maybe you even have some more evidence! Be sure to let me know and like always remember!
I am not weird, I am just very pink!
Until we read again.
