The Bachelorette VTuber Edition: Inugami Korone

Hear Ye Hear Ye Princess Pinkie is here with her first Vtuber post!

Salutations loyal subjects and sweet Island Guests. Today we open a new category of blog topic, something I have become very endeared to! VTubers.  So I came up with a plan to review VTubers.. but that is tricky!  Some I enjoy more in clip format, while others I watch streams after the fact that they have streamed and yet others I do enjoy interacting with… so how can I review them all in a fair and funny way?!  By bringing back an old format I could not keep up with back then!  I may have staff, I may have knights.. but I do not have a real waifu! Well Sayaka is my waifu..but well ..that’s a real person to me.. how about Verson/VTuber/Vblogger me?! She needs a Waifu as well… So let’s look at how weddable these lovely VTubers are while telling you something about you! Today we start with the first VTuber I became aware of! Inugami Korone.

This post will feature many clip and videos! Which sometimes do not show up in WordPress reader, so the ideal way to read these posts is on the actual Paradise Website

Who is Korone

Pin on V-Tubers!

To be fair, the first VTuber I was aware of wasn’t really Korone, it was Kizuna AI,  but back then it was not really called Vtuber! When she actually began doing sponsored mobile games a lot, I kind of fell off the AI-chan bandwagon! I missed the good old days where she played games like Limbo… Korone is the one that brought me back into the world.. and really hooked me to it!  When I saw AI I had a dream to be like this one day .. but she was too technologically advanced to ever live up too. Korone.. was a more reachable goal and while I am far from getting there as well..mostly due to money issues.. she became a big inspiration.

Inugami Korone is a japanese VTuber , she is a dog who works in a bakery, with her first name Korone being derived from the word Coronet and Inugami meaning “Dog God ”. She  is part of the most well known VTuber group, HoloLive. She joined the group in 2019 and after a series of announcements, sneak peaks and teases she had her debut on April 14th.  While it took Korone a while to find her style, she nowadays is best known… to me at least, for playing mostly retro games. Which was a big appeal to me!  Her on screen persona is oftenly highly energetic and erratic. Korone has shown to be very emotional during many streams which vary from.. hyper-enthusiasm.. too  crying so hard she had to end/pause a stream. She also often gets “mad” at her chat! Which has led to numerous memes! Because she tells she would punch chat in the face if she could and she made it possible for her to do so even.

Her fanbase is called Koronesuki, which is depicted as a bald man, drawn in photoshop paint. The avatar of chat is known as Listener-Kun. Often Korone’s dog mascot is seen on top of Listener-Kun.. but Korone has several versions of Listener kun.. including one with his face being punched in.. by  Korone’s first.  Her name is being used as a pun for donations, which she only picked up on after streaming for two years!  Many clip moments of Korone revolve around her interaction with chat,

I am a dog person

Vtubers almost exclusively are demi humans, we have ducks, reapers, pirates, demons, alpaca’s nymphs.. and Korone is a dog!  She is 92 years old in dog years..or at least her avatar is and I get along with dogs really really well!  I have this tranquil energy or something that makes dogs always vibe with me. My sister’s former toy poodle for example was such a restless spirit.. but around me it totally calmed down and would just take naps in my lap! Even when I just met it.. it just wanted to lay down close to me.. and that’s a reaction I often have with dogs!  I think having a Waifu that wants to lay down next to me is a pretty good trait to have a solid relationship!

We have similar styles

Inugami Korone - Hololive Fan Wiki

So Korone manifests as quite the sugary little thing!  Despite being a finger collecting, fan punching maniac!  I do like them crazy, especially with some sugar on top! Korone totally fits that brief!  She might just be Yandere enough.. and I do like them cute with rough edges. I have evil tendencies as well at times so.. we’d be a good fit!  Her original song Wonderful World is basically how I would produce a song if I had the vocal cords, the money , and the musicality to do it!  The only thing I can really do is write the song and come up with the concept.. but it would be something very very similar to this. I love how she mixes retro gaming tunes with a powerful idol girl song!  Most of it is about cutting of fingers and Korone herself as well, using all the memes and iconic things about her!  I think that is great… brand yourself.. I try to do that too!  You don’t need to do the thing everyone likes… just be you and she is totally doing that in this song, so we match in style as well. If I look at the direction it basically and the images used in this clip it is basically how I do my Sunshine Blogger posts!  So.. yeah once again we quite match!

We can play Retro Games together.

In VTuber terms, even though I am 21….NO!  I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING!  BUT I AM NOT!! 34!!!  I AM 21! Let’s try that again, so even though I am 21 I am considered a boomer in the Vtubing community!  I really love retro games the most!  I find a lot of modern day.. (Triple A)   games are generic. Why does a game have to have 2000 genres.. why do I have to humiliate other people? There are plenty of Indie games I still like, but mostly because they emulate the experience of the past!  Luckily Korone agrees with me!  I really hate games like Fortnite, Roblox or Apex so if I had a Vtuber wife who would just play those kinds of games, we would be such a poor match. But original Mario, Metal Slug or Spider Man 2000?! I am a game!  I could even protect Korone from some creepy worm-like enemies which she seems to be very afraid of! If she can save  me from wasps, or the B enemies in Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 we’d be a great retro gaming pair!

We both bond with our game companions

The best clip to show the beauty of Korone’s soul.. and how amazing her community is.. comes from a time when she played Monster Rancher 2, she did her voice a bit differently from what she does now as the video is over a year old… but this made me cry so hard. I legit cried for an hour or so.. because I shared the pain that Korone experiences in this video!  I play an occasional Nuzlocke and such, yet most of the time when my favourite pokémon dies, I can’t bring myself to play anymore.  I will be honest, I do not bond with every Pokémon .. but if I get a nickname just right.. and it develops in the right way and our bond is legit…. I am devastated when they die.  I’ve heard Jaiden goes through something similar, I know a pokétuber called MandJTv  says he goes through something similar.. but never did I experience their pain.. like when I saw Korone play this game. It shows me that she can bond with something virtual.. which is kinda important considering that my princess self is virtual as well! So now I know we can have a real connection

The Downsides on Dating Korone

She WILL punch me for backseat gaming

Imagine Korone and I are having a date!  We are playing a retro game together and things are going well!  I am sitting on her couch and it’s her turn! I want to support her and cheer her on! I accidentally get caught up in the hype of seeing my doggo girlfriend/date play the game and cheer for her….with some directions here and there!  Well Korone doesn’t really like that very much!  I do agree that backseat gaming is annoying..but her chat has driven her to a point that she will now inflict violence upon those who tell her stuff about the game!  I like my face… well at least my virtual face! I would rather not have my face punched.. That looks quite painful!
There are plenty of memes out there of Korone murdering people in Minecraft as well, she even has said the Iconic words Falcon Punch! And if you ever played Smash Bros, you know how painful it is to be hit by one of those!

She is a cat person

Okakoro - 9GAG
Artist Unknown

VTubers flirt with each other a lot, so it is no surprise that Korone does something like this as well , the object of her affection is called Okayu, a cat girl VTuber, whom I may or may not review in the future of this series, right now she is not in my field of interest. I will be honest I am NOT a cat person, at all. I would not go as far as to say I HATE cats, but I just can’t bond with them at all. Even in Pokémon I pretty much never end up using cat pokémon.. even if Skitty is pink!    Either way Korone is VERY affectionate about Okayu , the two hang out in real life and Korone throws tamper tantrums when she thinks Okayu is about to leave for home because she doesn’t want her to leave! She wants to be kissed by her and she totally adores the girl.. it’s shown in pretty much every stream they share!

While I do not believe in traditional monogamy, the reason to engage in a relationship for me is to experience being so important to someone while having that person be so important to you as well. In a way that feels great to be a fan of something… but mutual I guess.  If I know she places  Okayu above me.. that reason to make her my Waifu would kinda vanish! I’d like to be the number one of her affection.. and I am not sure if I’d ever get that, and even if I do I would hear cat stories all day long and I do not like hearing cat stories!  I love it if you show you got a cat and introduce them to me through cute photos.. but I mean those stories like “Oh my cat wants pats… oh my cat is grumpy ” .. they are the same every day!  So stop it Korone!

She wants my fingers

Like I said before Korone is a bit of a psychopath,  she loves taking peoples fingers. The origins of this quirk is odd, she started collecting fingers because she needed an original opening. Among HoloLive Gamers she was the only one who did not have her own little intro and she asked chat if it was okay if she asked chat to give them their fingers. Chat replied Yubi Yubi, and so Korone assumed it was okay!  Nowadays it is a commonly known meme!   And while we can easily dismiss it as just that.. There have been several sessions of gaming where Korone seems super delighted to collect a finger or more!  Not just once.. she seems delighted every time!  Now she can cut off my legs if she wants.. I am not using those a lot … but my fingers I very much need to game. She seems to take index fingers mostly and that is my most used finger, it’s my typing finger!  Or fingers. I hardly ever type with other fingers!  So I would lose the ability to blog and would become much worse in gaming… and over all I would really not want that!  I just am afraid that if she tries to put a ring on my finger.. it won’t be attached to my body!

We are gonna have language problems

Holo Live Korone Gifts & Merchandise | Redbubble

Like many Japanese Vtubers Korone doesn’t exactly speak english and I don’t speak Japanese.  Maybe if I tried very hard… VERY hard, I could be as good in Japanese as she is in English… but before you scold me, I already speak Dutch, local dialect, english and german and I can’t help myself a tiny bit in french and spanish! Not that it will help me talk to Korone of course.  The difference between Korone and most english Vtubers is that Korone is easily one of the most memed ones for her bad understanding of english! She has english only streams as a sort of gag. She says some pretty strange things! For example, she claims to be Mercedes Benz!  She is also Volkswagon!  I am not into cars!  I can’t even drive one!. If she takes a shower in the morning and our pipes are clogged.. I’d have to probably understand something along the lines of.  Water..in shower..inversion!  Peepay no hole! Okay?  She is very bad with adjectives.. and I use a lot of those!  Since I am not looking for that much of a physical relation with a Waifu.. I do think communication is a big thing! In fairness I think it would be pretty cute if we tried though.. kind of like that time she tried to defuse a bomb with a shinigami!

How eligible is Korone?

Do we have a future together? Probably not! Okayu is too much of a factor for me to overcome! The two make a great couple and I do not like to rip-up couples! Separations DO happen though in the HoloLive canon, so who knows maybe in the future! I am not even fully a model yet! So there is hope! She hasn’t ever threatened to take Okayu’s fingers as far as I am aware so if she can leave my limbs alone we’d be good!  In fact, since we are talking about a bride for my virtual self.. I think my unicorn magic would allow me to regenerate lost limbs anyway.. and she can have my pinky…ironically!  In the end I think we would be a cute couple to look at BUT it might be a bit of a superficial mariage! I’d pretend to understand what she likes about Eating Mike Tyson’s ass… but deep down I can’t understand.. I just can’t explain that to her..so we will pretend everything is alright! WoooWoooWooo! In the end I give Korone a wedding score off 7 yubi’s and a fingernail out of 10.

Do you know about Korone?! What is your favourite Vtuber?! Are there any Vtubers you’d like me to review in this series? Let me know! I am looking forward to do more of these! I have a lot of fun plans! So let’s talk about Vtubers in the comments.. or let’s talk about something else in the next post! Untill then! Stay random! *Quack*

Pinkie in Search of a Waifu (Part 3) Aoi Hana

It’s almost Valentine’s day and by the looks of it , I am going to be all by myself.  To prevent such an incident from happening next year , on this blog we have started the quest to find me a Waifu! In this episode we will look at the third of Fred’s four suggestions. After which I will need six more to start our Bachelorette series. Where we pit these girls against each other to earn the roses and find out who will be my waifu! So keep the suggestions coming.  Today we look at the anime Aoi Hana!
Who will get to live with me in my Bachelorette mansion?!

Warning:
This article contains spoilers for the entire series of Aoi Hana. That being said these spoilers are all fairly obvious outcomes of their respective story. As far as I am concerned none of these spoilers ruin the show due to the way the show tells its own story and how the inevitable the outcome of the show feels.

Sweet Blue Flower

What is it with Yuri series and the colour blue? Is blue some sort of symbol colour for gay girls that I am unaware about. I don’t think it’s much of a thing in the Netherlands and my Italian friend didn’t know about it either! Italians love blue so they should know! I really wonder though! Yet I can not let that distract me. Aoi Hana is a show about two childhood friends Akira and Fumi who reunited with each other once they start commuting to their new schools. Both join their respective schools drama club and their paths begin to cross more and more. Fumi is a lesbian woman and Akira is mostly oblivious to love.  We see them form relationships with others from friendly ones to romantic once as we explore what is is truly important in any relationship. This all is set on the background of their drama clubs performing the play Wuthering Heights which in its core is about a toxic relationship. So this is one of those heavy analogies shows!

(I really hate this shwo’s intro.. it has very little to do with the actual show)

The contenders for the Waifu list are limited to the main characters this time, as all four main characters show at the very least a hint of being into women. Most secondary girls or women are rarely given enough depth to see if they are into girls though after watching the entire 11 episode series I can fairly certainly say we got no other contenders. Having said that, my attention has slipped throughout the course of this show a few times so I might have missed a subtlety.

The four main characters are Manjoume Fumi a first year who is socially a bit awkward. She is emotionally very frail and cries a lot and the most fully convinced lesbian in the series. Her best friend Okudaira Akira is about her counterpart. She is bubbly , tiny energetic and  a super positive entity that smiles with everything even her own failures… she is referred to Achan by Fumi. Their childhood tradition. Sugimoto Yasuko is the bisexual popular girl that every girl wants to be with (even the straight ones) the cool kid. She plays basketball and is tall and butch and thusly gets the male lead role in the school play. She has her heart set on Fumi..but keeps a secret in her heart as well. Finally we have Ikumi Kyouko who is Akira’s classmate and she is desperately and very one sidedly in love with Yasuko. She is an artist who joined the drama club to be close to Sugimoto Senpai but gets more than she bargained for when she finds out her new friend’s best friend is in a relationship with the woman she loves.

(Akira, Kyoko, Yasuko, Fumi)

Triangles Everywhere

I will admit I struggled with this anime a bit. It is not necessarily a bad show though. I really loved the story it had to tell. What I like less is the way it is set up. Take for example the main love story that is central in these 11 episodes. Yasuko and Fumi , it is a somewhat toxic relationship where Yasuko is very much depicted as a selfish person. This is shown throughout not one but two triangle relations around the talentful basketball player. First of all there is Kyouko who loves her while she is with Fumi. This sours the relation between Fumi and Kyoko..to an extend. They aren’t mean to another but very tense still. It would have been an interesting dynamic if Sugimoto would not have one sidedly loved her male teacher, kinda using Fumi as a rebound. Throughout the show we also see Fumi notice her relation is not going that well and be more drawn to Akira…who in turn kinda, but not really, shows interest in Kyouko.Who is also desired by her fiancé in name only Kou. It all feels very convoluted for an 11 episode manga and in the end that does form a bit of an issue.

It doesn’t really help that the instigator of everyone’s misery, Sugimoto Yasuko is a fairly horrible person. She is super petty, often has temper tantrums, she is snobbish and selfish and a very VERY poor loser. Near the middle of the show the stage group performs Wuthering Heights, which is about the toxic love between Heathcliff and Catherine and the audience speaks their minds on how terrible Catherine is, she is an analogy for Sugimoto herself. Which brings me to another little gripe I had with this series. This analogy feels a bit hammered in. Wuthering Heights is a fairly well known novel by Emily Bronté and one would figure people who see the play either know the story or go there to support their family.

Instead we see the crowd analyse the story so the anime and manga can make analogies… and that’s not the only times stuff like that happens. For some reason this only happens to Yasuro though. Like the show really wants to hammer in how terrible this person is. By the end of the show she sees the error of her ways ..but because she doesn’t get what she wants she then decides to bail on everyone and go study abroad. While doing this we see newspaper headlines on how the girl has pushed her basketball team to great heights how they need her and now she bails for petty reasons. We see her family acknowledge how petty she is and she mistreat Kyouko to a ridiculous extend. Even when the latter is trying to get closure she is shown to ignore the message that would give the other girl some closure finally. We get it! Sugimoto Yasuko is bad! She will not be my Waifu Pick.

Friendship is love too!

Because of how clearly toxic this relationship between Fumi and Yasuko is from the get go we are all waiting for her to end up with Kyouko or her Achan and the show is at it’s best when the old love is out of the picture. Luckily enough that is plenty of time still. The show really shines when it’s just Achan and Fumi.. or even the little summer camp with all their friends but Yasuko was adorable. Fumi begins to develop feelings for Akira who still has this weird non flirty but very connected kind of way. I really liked those feelings because they actually felt genuine. While Fumi clearly loved Yasuko the doom flag was raised from episode 2 so on a subconscious level I never really bought it.

All the other girls are connected through friendship.. a friendship that deepens over the course of the series and the show does a really fine job of depicting how friendships can mean so much more than just to find your significant other. Fumi has friends, Sugimoto has not, one gets a fairly happy end, the other is miserable. Romance shows tend to .. hype up that significant other over anything in the whole wide world where nothing else matters anymore.. this show keeps its feet firm on the ground.

I might even go as far as to say this isn’t actually a romance show. It’s not about love.. in the romantic way.. it’s about unrequited love and false love more so than real one. It’s about how romantic love can be such a strong desire that sometimes we are just chasing ghosts. Kyouko is one of the strongest examples. Not only is she desperately in love, with sugimoto senpai,  she herself has a suitor who is desperately in love with her. Kou her fiancé in name only is often strung along for a ride that will only inflict pain on him. Even when he asks Akira to help him pick out a perfect give to please her, she immediately knows the gift is to perfect to be from him! They aren’t compatible which made me think that Kyouko and Akira just might be.Kyouko is being pictured as desperate though even if she tries to move on she simply can not  let alone with Kou. In the end we get a girl that has her charm but also still feels kind of mean spirited and also a bit toxic so our little painter will not be moving into the Bachelorette mansion with me!

A blooming flower

That leaves us with Achan and Fumi-Chan , by far the best characters in the entire series. Some of the best characters I have seen in a fair bit and while I do think they would fit nicely together the ending of she show keeps things fairly open. Which apparently is a huuuge issue for people all across the internet. To those people I really have to ask if they watched the same show as me. There are incredibly strong  implications that the two will get together, simply for being two non toxic people and Fumi realising how to cope with relationships in the end. She tells the only cure for unrequited love is moving on gracefully and to only have room in your heart for one love. While Fumi was obsessed and in love with her cousin at the end of the show she realises that wasn’t her first love at all, her first love was Achan..so she could finally let her cousin go. Now she only has one love in her heart which is Achan. Should that love go unanswered she has the tools to move on gracefully. All the flags for a successful relation fall into place at that moment. Fumi will find her happy ending no matter what. We have seen hints that Akira might swing that way as well so it may just be a matter of time.

That being said I can still use the vagueness of the ending to snatch Fumi as my Bachelorette contender. While I love Achan for her quirky behaviour the character is simply way to immature to me. I found her voice a bit annoying in all honesty even though I do like the quirkiness of it I think I would get annoyed with her fairly soon. While I am happy and cheerful minded like her, I do not have the huge amount of energy she has and would not be able to find my rest with her. She is a great and loyal friend who would be fun to hang out with Yet I would get that same energy around since she is Fumi’s best friend as well. The latter has shown she can perfectly live with Achan just being a friend.. as long as I managed to conquer Fumi myself though.

Fumi is the only person I really respect in this series, she has shown growth and has become more confident even if she is still the easily to cry loveable socially awkward girl she was at the beginning. Miss Manjoume has accepted who she is by the end of the show, something she very much struggles with in the beginning. She isn’t as afraid to tease and to have fun. She also isn’t afraid to defend herself even if it hurts others.  I could not be with someone who constantly diminishes themselves just in favor of others.

It’s very annoying when something you love gets a bad review or if that restaurant you like and love to talk about gets called gross a few hours before you go eat there. If I love a person more than anything in the world and they keep devaluing themselves to below everything else.. it kind of feels like that love is being devalued as well. The person that I love more than anything in the world feels like they need to give up everything for others because they are not worth more… that would include they would give up me. I went through that once with an eternal good person.. and that just doesn’t work. You have to somewhat love yourself to be loved.

Fumi does this the best , she matters, what she wants matters. When we first see her she can barely pick anything from a menu.. or a club to join .. but in the end she asks for what she wants, she tells people her needs and lives by it and we see a much happier Fumi, who doesn’t just cry from sadness but for the first time we see her cry with happiness. Those type of tears are from a woman I could see myself being with! Those are the tears of a strong woman.

In the end I got to watch a very enjoyable show, that is slightly bogged down by the character of Sugimoto. There is just to much going on with her and things drag on to long in her romance. I hated the unnecessarily nude intro as it barely has anything to do with the show and skipped it every time. Yet there is still a quite enjoyable anime that stumbles for me around the fourth till seventh episode. Those could have been removed and put at the end to give us a stronger sense of closer for an even better show.  The art style with it’s fluffy looking backgrounds took some time to get used to but grew on me as charming. All in all a good anime to put on for valentines if you do not want something overly sweet.

Pinkie in search of a Waifu (Part 2) Bloom Into You

It is time to look for a Waifu again. Last time I looked at the characters of Liz and the Blue Bird and hosted a poll which one I should take to my rose ceremony Liz or Ririka. It ended up a 50/50 tie with one vote each.  Guess these polls don’t do a lot huh! Still I feel slightly more comfortable with Liz anyway so I will be my own tie breaker. She goes to the rose ceremony. On to find my next contestant. This time I will look at a little show called Bloom Into You. When I first started this I thought that all these characters would be a bit too childish for me, and while that thought never completely left my head, I will admit my heart skipped a few beats.  It’s been a while since I felt …understood like this. A lot of the characters in this show would get me.

Conceal Don’t Feel!

This show follows the high school life of Yuu Koito and her journey to (try) and fall in love.  Yuu never really understood love, she waited for that moment to be swept of her feet, but she has never felt it and is convinced she never will. When she sees her upperclassmen Toukou Nanami , a very popular  and seemingly very perfect and promising 2nd year student, rejecting a love confession using the “excuse” that she can’t fall in love.. she gets intrigued by this young woman. (Un)fortunately for Yuu, this senpai soon develops a massive crush on her and the woman she thought was like her now is what makes her most uneasy, yet maybe trough this woman she can finally learn what love is. The moment I saw Yuu make the confession that she never had really strong feelings of being in love and that she expects so much more gave me chills.  This was very close to what I feel… it’s not totally the same but similar enough. I don’t feel that thing you see in the movies either, I hear people talk about it all the time but to me it feels a lot more bland. This show deals with false expectations as heavy theme throughout the show. Yuu has false expectations about love, Toukou has a lot of false expectations and tries to live up to many of them as well. Sayaka Saeki is in love with Toukou, she along with Koyomi Kanou a young aspiring writer and friend of Yuu are depicted as the ones to break through these false expectations but more on them later. Yuu Koiti is a character with a very important message that ironically made me feel things. Romance isn’t  always that disney thing, it’s not about that thing in romantic comedies either where you just go wild with lust. Sometimes we experience things differently or not at all. Yet that doesn’t mean we do not experience anything. Maybe I could be with someone like Yuu because she is someone like me.

(she even kinda looks like my avatar)

Over the course of this 13 episode anime I definitely felt a lot of sympathy and compassion for the young pink haired damsel. The show features a lot of inner monologue which allows us to get to know the main three characters a lot more than through dialogue alone. Being the protagonist that is fairly straightforward and honest to herself we get to know Yuu the best. There is an honesty in her character that isn’t afraid to point out flaws of other characters in order to strengthen their bond I can deeply appreciate in her. She also isn’t afraid to play the mental game. She can analyse what her friends need and how they would react to certain situations and her thought process is very similar to my own.  She can see the need for kisses hugs and affection but isn’t really impressed by it. It’s all sort of nice but not what people make out of it. I feel the same way about the physical expressions of love. While I do not actually mind them all that much , I find them rather irrelevant. While I do like hugging, I do not need like someone to rub my feet.. or warm body to stick my cold feet under..eeew. Sex to me is extremely overrated. It’s kind of like junk food to me. Occasionally you get a craving and than you indulge but I would not want it on my plate everyday..eeewww. When I researched if I might be asexual one guy said the easiest test was to imagine the person of your dreams naked on a bed and a cake. You can only take one. Do this like a 100 times at different times and if you keep picking the cake you might be an ace. I would ask my naked lady friend to put on some clothes so we can share the cake with some tea together while we chat.. so while I do like some attention and love, I crave the emotion not the whole sheet wrinkling thing.

(Even if people stare at me longingly, I just stare back long)

It feels like Yuu might be the same, love feels dull to her. A kiss means little to her, yet that tiny feeling is enough for her. I like that we could have it good together. Unfortunately Yuu feels a bit too young for me. Like I know I should not make anime age to much of a issue her.. but mentally she is still to young. Throughout the show she seems a bit too naive and ignorant at times. She doesn’t really know who she is yet.. and more importantly what she wants yet. While the manga fixes this issue a lot better than the anime in terms of accepting her own preference to women in the anime everything is left a bit unresolved. Which is fine we know she will get there with time and how is left to our imagination, but Yuu doesn’t feel strong enough yet to be a component of the relationship. She is the source of someone’s else’s happiness. The shoe polish that makes someone else shine. She is the sandwich part of a peanut butter and jelly  sandwich. Sure she is an integral part of the relationship but everybody will only talk how nice the peanut butter or jelly are no one ever really talks about the sandwich. I want to make someone shine just as much as they make me shine.. so I feel with Yuu we would more likely become best friends/ near sisters.

(Maybe we could be more than friends…but……)

Don’t Let them Know!

This flaw of Yuu is shown even in the concept of the anime itself. While she is our main character the story of the show is never about her. It’s about Touko, the woman that is interested in her. Toukou  would not be a good match for me because she never really is herself. Which really goes against my own believes. In fact I really dislike Touko. She doesn’t deserve someone like Yuu or the love of someone like Sayaka. Funny enough Yuu and to an extend Sayaka both understand this as well. The great miss Nanami is but a charade that the entire world sees and both know that , that person isn’t really Touko. She is simply wearing a mask. Pretending to be something she is not. Being yourself is a very big theme is this anime as well and trough the series we see everyone learn this lesson but Touko, in fact for a while  thought the series would have ended with her suicide as we only see her get more and more lost. Her loved ones keep telling her to be herself.. but she made it her goal despite their request to be her dead sister. The perfect girl.

(Nobody can know I am not perfect!… No one is perfect so everybody kinda knows)
(That equals FE-E or in other words Irony!)

Of course Touko is only chasing a dream because nobody is perfect. Yet another theme in this story, and a lesson I had to deal with. This show hit close to home in many fronts. I have pretended to me someone I am not, I have wore masks while I knew that that wasn’t the person I was. I strived to be someone I was not.. but that is a goal you can never truly reach. You can never go against yourself too much. So if you try to be not you.. you are doomed to fail, which results in self hate. This show captures that sentiment very well. Touko always reaching for something beyond her reach. Not just in terms of her main mission to become her sister, but to win sports events from actual jocks and to put on an epic stage play without theatre experience as well. The stage play is a perfect metaphor for Touko because everything she says to anyone but to Yuu, and in a very rare case to Sayaka is all fake. Like a script. I felt like that in the past.. I read scripts and I hated myself for doing it. So I completely understand Touko..but as she was at the end of the anime series she would be someone I would get very angry with. When I love someone I want them to be themselves all the time , I do not compromise to only see the real you in secret spaces. I want someone who can wholeheartedly commit to who they are, someone who accepts who they are. Not just who they want to be with. The person who did that best in this show will be my Waifu selection I will take to the rose ceremony with me.

(I shall leave Yuu to you Touko, you might actually be good togehter ..for now)

Let it Go!

Sayaka Saeki is the one character that I found consistently strong and admirable throughout the series. Sayaka might seem to only be a love rival to Yuu but there is so much more to her. Sayaka functions a bit as the “true reality”  of this series. She isn’t someone who has it easy but she mostly sees things for what they are. Even Touko to an extend. One could say she lives to much for the woman she is in love with but unlike Yuu , Sayaka acts mostly in order to keep herself happy. She can’t confess to her beloved because she knows that she will be rejected by her. Which is pretty much established to be true. We see her notice stuff is going on between the two other main characters and she does decide to step in. Block what she doesn’t want as much as she could. Like Yuu she wants Touko to live life as herself but she doesn’t have the same reach as the pink haired damsel has. So the vice president of the student council will have to tolerate that younger girl in order to keep her dream alive. She is the most honest about herself about being attracted to woman and thusly she becomes something that no one else in this show really is. The one who knows who she is. She knows she is into women and that she can not change it. She knows she is into Touko but can not have her , rather than seeking out a mask to hide behind she is searching for reasons not to wear a mask. She is asking other lesbian woman about  their feelings so she can understand hers better. She has tried to change but know that she has failed and that she HAS to be herself. She is very much in a similar step of self exploration as I am. Her more serious and focussed nature might make her seem like a bit of a boring and spiteful character but she needs the right partner. In the past we see her as fun loving and more easy going and that can be drawn out. She isn’t perfect and she is aware of that but she is the only main character that is seeking out her own happiness rather than that of another. That is a very important step and it made Sayaka step right into my heart.

(OMG Saeki-Chan is so adorable like that!)

Now Sayaka got a bit hurt by the anime ending on just a “date” between Yuu and Touko, you have a feeling they will be alright, but Sayaka doesn’t really get much closure. We just see her sitting in a chair with some glasses and a book curled up getting distracted from her reading and that’s our goodbye to Sayaka. Which is a shame..but that same shot happend earlier and that was a moment that I thought “Wow she is cute” and not in the adorable manner like with Yuu in the.. I would not mind curling up next to her with a manga or my Nintendo Switch kinda way. Sayaka doesn’t have an easy life.she discovered she was into girls rather early when her Senpai told her.. It  was just a phase and being a lesbian is wrong. She lived by that mantra and left her private all-girl-school in an attempt to “pray the gay away” hoping that interacting with boys would make her straight again. Only to find out it didn’t. Her dirty blond hair, her little mannerism being al stoic. I think she could push my ambition a bit further while I could make her more outgoing.

(I kinda wish to take Touko’s place.. Sayaka was fun at that moment)

Bloom into you is a great show about identity and the search of it. The three characters all represent a phase we can go through in search for ourselves. Yuu is the one when you haven’t really figured out. When your friends are further in live than you are you could end up as there supporting actor, but you should always play the lead role in the story of your live! You might not be miserable, but everything feels very dulled, as highlights are never about youl. Touko is what you get when you try to be someone you are not. Total and inescapable misery. You will need someone else to break free of this. In my case it was a friend who confessed something major, who was welcomed so warmly that I thought… what am I doing pretending .. this isn’t real. A few months later I was finally be able to take of the mask and be the real me. Sayaka did this as well and while the show does make it very clear that we do not always get what we want in fact, we should always want more than we can have anyway. Because that is how we grow and how we strive. We have to accept that things aren’t perfect and sometimes we do have to settle.

Sayaka accepts she can not have Touko but chooses the happiness her “regular” company provides rather than not having any at all.  While she tries to outdo Touko in school-work she never does, she doesn’t overwork herself but accepts her limits, hence why she doesn’t tell Touko next time she will try even harder. She simply tells her friend that if she slips up, she will be there. Sayaka has been through her own hell, but stays strong, she knows who she is and who she wants to be and makes steps to be happy as herself. I respect her and think she deserves someone who is good for her, she needs someone who is in the same phase of life as her and she is pretty darn cute. So I think we might have found a great match, in a great anime series.

Pinkie in Search of a Waifu (Part I): Liz and the Blue Bird

When I wrote my latest real neat blogger award, I confessed I did not have a waifu. Being a female identifying person with interests in girls, in a sexualy postive – asexual kinda way, I just never found someone that truly gelled with me. I had anime crushes but on girls out of reach, with them either being straight or taken. So I stated I was Waifu Single. Looking for a lesbian girl, who wasn’t overly lewd and someone who would have a hint of crazy or awkwardness about them. Fred from Au Natural told me he could find me a waifu and recommended me few anime. Since I dedicated my blog to love, I thought finding myself a Waifu could make a great special! So over the next few installments I will search Fred’s anime’s and potentially your suggestions as well for my 2d dream girl. I never expected to find a contender for my favorite anime movie however.

A story about about a story about a Story.

Liz and the Blue bird is produced by Kyoto Animation and is a very peculiar little thing. It is set in the universe of the light novel and anime universe of Sound Euphonium. Yet it doesn’t follow the main cast. Instead  on one of the background characters. Mizore. A extremely shy introverted oboe player. A small sub story in the light novel universe sort of speak. We follow her journey to prepare for a big music competition while she deals with her feelings for fellow band member Nozomi, who plays the flute. For the competition the band has selected a music rendition of the story of Liz and the Blue Bird. A fairly classical folktale about a lonely woman meeting this bright and beautiful girl and the two hit it off right away. It is immediately made clear that the story of Liz and Blue Girl is almost a mirror image of that of Nozomi and Mizore.  Nozomi is bright and bubbly and super cheerful, while Mizore is very much a loner. So if we consider Sound Euphonium the main story, I guess this is about a story in that universe but that story is totally build around a fictional story inside that store. Woosh! That’s some levels already.

So let’s make this a bit more shallow. Let’s talk design of the four main girls. First we have Mizore, who looks like your typical japanese school girl, her hair a bit disheveled and frizzy, but she has beautiful eyes. Her movement is a bit awkward and she looks a bit like an unpolished gem! She has a pinkish eye colour and a cute whisper soft voice.  (I watched it in japanese) She is definitely something I could go with appearance wise. Nozomi looks a bit like a counterpart, her hair is much more defined and in a popular style, her eyes are a grey, that still somehow shine brighter than most of the coloured iris characters. Conveying how much strength there is in there. Her design is a bit generic but cute enough! Liz is my favorite character design of the lot. She has this distinct older feeling, which makes her a bit more romanceable for my age of double digits that is not 22 but lower than double that.  She has this mundane /average look I like. Like Mizore she doesn’t feel overly pretty but conveys sweetness and care. . Blue girl is a hyper energetic girl with a somewhat tomboyish short haircut and an overly long blue dress. Somehow that clothing style kinda annoyed me. It felt very unshapely and kinda unfitting as if it washed out her personality. I wouldn’t reject her for it but so far she is ranked last.

A story about music about a story

While I am not going to spoil this amazing story much like always the first five minutes are free game. Nozomi and Mizore are the top contenders for a solo in the competition where the flute represents the blue bird and  the Oboe represents Liz. Much to Nozomi’s dismay however the story ends “badly” where Liz eventually has to part ways with the Blue Girl. However she knows Mizore would never let her go, because she is simply unable to. Mizore realises this as well and has difficulty to relate to Liz. This leads her to not perform as well with her music as she possibly could. Since Mizore wants to go to music school however it is very important  that she performs well. So we get an interesting form of dilemma. Mizore needs to grow, but she is terrified that she will realise that she eventually has to let Nozomi , her only true friend go. The entire story seems to reflect this imagery through very small and silent scenes. We see the two staring through each others at windows oftenly for example. Either Nozomi spots Mizore being lonely or Mizore spots Nozomi having fun with her other friends and not being able to give Mizore the attention she seeks. During these scenes we don’t get any dialogue we just get subtle hints of Oboe and flute music, Which perfectly tell us the feelings of both parties involved. Very impressive.  Every so often one of the two reads from the story book of Liz and we move to the fairy tale world where Liz and the Blue Girl live. Drawing closer and closer to their inevitable goodbye (which is stated that’s how the story ends in the first minutes so this is not a spoiler).

That fairy tale world once more is beautifully orchestrated from beginning to end.  The music the girls have to play for the concert takes center stage in these scenes. Drawing ever closer to the third act. .. the dreaded part where the two part ways. However in this fairy tale world is also my biggest gripe with this movie. The backgrounds are done in this soft hand sketched story book style, while the characters are a much brighter anime style. The issue I have with these is that the characters are very much on a different layer, almost as if they are part of one of those pop up books. It’s very noticable and something I could not get into myself. While I love the esthetics of the world and most of the characters the way humans stick out of the shots at times kinda feels like a badly blurred green screen to me. It feels intentional but I found it to be kinda ugly looking, which was the only thing that kept me from being 100% invested in this beautiful tale.

Each time we exit the story book time will jump a bit forward in the real world and those notes of the next act draw closer to Mizore’s theme and that of Nozomi as well. Which give the movie a sort of tension.  Will we get a happy ending? Or will their story be to paralel and will we see the end of a friendship? It seems Mizore wants a more romantic relationship and the flutist seems to friendzone her, but if we have to believe the music there is many more layers. Blue girl and Nozomi are first being depicted as  fairly simple happy go lucky characters without many layers. Very free in the way they go about. Childish to an extend almost and while they do get a lot more depth towards the third act of the movie…such a coincidence… I’d put them both out of the running for my waifu competition. I’d have some issues with people who solve their problems by kind of smiling them away rather than dealing with them.

A story about Freedom, Setting Free and Freeing yourself by setting free.

The story of both the fairy tale world and the “real world’  ask a lot of questions of you. Is it okay to be happy if I am holding someone back from being their truest self? Can I even be happy when I know I am in the way of their truest potential. Does that feeling change when I realise that they desire only to be with me? This movie highlights important questions we have about our relationships but also shows us some answers. As a bit of a loner, but not to much I find myself easily transported into Liz her mindset.  I can socialize with people in town fairly okay, but when push comes to shove I can still feel a tad bit lonely. The way the movie depicts it in the first act, I could relate to it so , so much. The way Liz puts her own needs below that of Blue Girl..even if she is just making assumptions is a process I am working on with my psych a lot. I did it too. We sometimes feel we are bad for someone, thus we have to set them free, but are we REALLY doing them any favors?  This movie made me think a lot, and cry as well. Throughout music and visuals , we are told two stories, what is the right thing to do there? When do we set someone free? Are we really the person who needs to set someone free? Or do we ourselves need to be set free from those ideas? This movie makes you think in a fantastic and very real manner. These issues are real and never really “enlarged”. Sure.. I never had the magical encounter that Liz or Mizore had  but I can still feel for them. The ending also doesn’t go for the cheap route. It again invites for thought! Good for them! And such a great movie with so many relatable characters. This movie is truly one of the most touching and well directed and detailed anime films I have seen in recent times. There’s plenty of gems out there but rarely does one strike this close to the heart. This one a deadshot straight in the kokoro for me!

Now that we found out the show has relatable characters let’s find out how many characters are datable. Like I said Nozomi and Blue Girl are out. I like them fine as characters but  they aren’t a great match for me. Mizore and Liz are much more my thing, but how about availability? I mean I would not take someone away from their promised lover. Is Mizore a contender? Well I am not spoiling. You will just have to see if she will make my list. Liz however is a contender. We know she sets the Blue Girl free and remains alone. So my first waifu is 2d in a 2d world. Jeez… this feels like Dark Magician girl all over again. Can’t we do better?! Yes we actually can.  A minor character in the anime series as well as this movie is called Ririka Kenzaki, an Oboe player that does seem to display some romantic interest in Mizore but that might be me, She also seems socially awkward, and has the same low energy geeky humor as me. Her favorite colour is Dahlia Purple which is a good match with pink. Her second favorite colour Mimoso could be nice with Pink in spring and both more or less fit in my blog colour scheme. Ririka seems like she is just a bit crazy and devoted in a good way. Being 16 or so she is kinda young. Liz is compasionate and caring and like i said earlier I can relate a lot to her, she seems age appropriate and I do like her style of living ( as long as we’d get wifi) the animals may scare me at first but I’d love to a bread eating racoon. Mizore might be a bit timid for me, she would not do well among my friends I think. My gay best friend would eat her alive.

So lets do it like this let’s cast a vote on who is the best Waifu and they will move to the next round! If you think you know a better waifu for me suggest an anime (but please not the waifu itself) in the comments and I will investigate for another episode of Pinkie in Search of a Waifu! Jaa Ne Mina!
