Periwinkle’s Art of War (02): The Fogs and Forgotten Battles of Alaska

Recently playing the classic Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation had me daydreaming and wondering about the history of the real Alaskan Peninsula Islands the game is said to take place on. Upon reading the Peninsula’s history I stumbled into a forgotten chapter in World War Two history and by re-examining the past I find new perspective of where we are in America today.

The fog never seems to end on the Aleutian Islands in the Alaskan peninsula but the low visibility has never seemed to slow nomads and explorers throughout history. Even at times acting as a strategic cloak or even a blanket burying the remains of soldiers long since forgotten.

Most of the islands themselves now belonging to the U.S. state of Alaska. While some farther west belong to the Far Eastern administrative district of Russia – known as Kamchatka Krai.

But hundreds of thousands of years before oil rigs, English colonists, Russian traders, merchants and Christian missionaries danced across the isolated piano teeth islands, the archipelago itself acted as Gaia’s horizontal ladder between worlds. The only land linking the continents of Asia and North America.

But it wouldn’t be the last time North Americans and Asians would find themselves co-occupying the territories for better or worse.

The “Alaskan Bush”

For gamers this setting would be most familiar with Metal Gear Solid fans. With the original PlayStation, writer Hideo Kojima realized that the 32-bit technology finally had caught up with his story telling and he aimed to redo and expand on his original MSX game, Metal Gear. He saw the updated technology the perfect platform to expand on the game’s lore and story in a more cinematic manner.

He wrote the entire game taking place on the fictional Shadow Moses Island. An island that is said to belong to a part of the real Fox Island Archipelago in the Alaskan Peninsula. Foggy year round, the adverse weather makes the destination extremely hard to navigate and naturally isolated.

But unlike Kojima’s fictional military conflict set in 2005 a real conflict unfolded between the United States and Japan in the same area sixty years before.

June 3rd 1942 began the Aleutian Island Campaign in the American and Pacific Theaters of World War Two. In only the second invasion of American soil ever, the campaign saw a small force of Japanese soldiers occupying two small islands on the archipelago.

Both Attu and Kiska islands, two of the westernmost islands in the territory of Alaska were occupied by Japanese forces. The Japanese reasoned that control of the Aleutian Islands would prevent the United States from an attack across the Northern Pacific.

Japanese troops raise the Imperial battle flag on Kiska Island in the Aleutians (6/6/42)

At first very little changed for the Unangans (the indigenous people living on the islands) under Japanese rule but that would soon change. Many Unangans would be captured by the Japanese and shipped to Hokkaido where they would be kept in internment camps in harsh conditions. Fearing the Japanese advance the American government forcibly evacuated the remaining Unangans into internment camps of their own where many would die due to exposure of Measles and Influenza. It would take nearly eighty years for the United States Government to formally apologize for the internment and treatment of their people.

Vehicles couldn’t maneuver across the island’s rugged terrain. United State’s soldiers here carry supplies by hand through Jarmin Pass

At the time the American and Canadian fears were growing to a fever pitch. They feared having most American troops already in engaged in the European and Pacific theaters of the war that there wasn’t a lot to stop the Japanese from moving up through the peninsula and overtaking Anchorage, moving south to Vancouver and ultimately settling in Seattle, Washington.

The Japanese opened up the aggressions with bombing Dutch Harbor in the city of Unalaska, Alaska. The aerial bombing which made use of the foggy weather conditions as cover lasted over two days – the second of the two days being much more effective – leaving a burning hospital, oil storage tanks and a breached barrack ship left burning in their wake.

140,000 American and Canadian troops were sent to the islands to meet the Japanese. Rugged terrain and ruthless weather would have devastating effects on both sides of the war effort. By March of 1943 a Japanese fleet was engaged in the naval battle of the Kormandorski Islands. One that would cut off Japanese supplies to the Imperial ground troops on the island indefinitely. Setting the stage for the largest forgotten battle on United States soil ever.

Operation Landcrab

On May 11th 1943 – “Operation Landcrab” began with the sole objective of recapturing Attu island from Japanese forces whose numbers only estimated around 8,000. Japanese forces despite being outnumbered and outgunned held the higher ground while Allied forces struggled with booby traps and frostbite.

Finally on May 29th following fierce entrenched combat the Japanese without warning led the largest banzai charge recorded in the Pacific theater. Led by Colonel Yamasaki the charge penetrated Allied forces so deep they wound up face to face with American rear-echelon support troops. The fighting that commenced there after was barbaric. Furious Hand to hand, face to face battle. Completely outnumbered, the Japanese troops were virtually exterminated.

Shortly thereafter Allied troops landed on Kiska island only to find it abandoned. Under the cover of fog the Japanese chose to remove their remaining troops from the area. Like ghost ships drifting back to the expanse of the sea the forgotten battles were now left to the mercy of time and history books which would bury them soon enough.

LEGACY

American military propaganda during WWII. (We’ve come a long way.)

In a foggy, frozen hell hole killing one another with their bare hands it would surely seem unthinkable to both American and Japanese soldiers that less than fifty years later both countries would be incredibly close military and economic allies.

But a theme Kojima constantly reminds his gamers of is that the enemies and politics constantly change yet the battlefield remains the same. Despite a time period’s politics and conflicts – despite yesterday’s rivals making todays greatest allies – despite what propaganda and claims of righteousness on either side of a battle may be – war is just as barbaric as it ever was.

After all of the decision makers and mouth pieces lay down and go to sleep at night it still all ultimately comes down to men and women – human beings – brutalizing and killing one another over an ever changing political landscape and societal policies that are bound to change soon enough on their own.

After the war the wounds began to heal and culturally the times changed as they always seem to do. With the increase in trade, the meteoric rise of the internet, video games, anime and more the love between our two cultures has never been stronger. I, like millions of other Americans LOVE everything about Japanese culture and Americans and American influence is met with an equally enthusiastic adoration in the Far East.

In a particularly heartbreaking week following the senseless murders of eight people in Atlanta – six of them women of Asian descent – it’s imperative for us as a melting pot to mourn the senseless loss of life together and to be angry on behalf of the victims together but most importantly use this time to embrace one another more than ever. To reach out to one another. To love ourselves and each other. To not let the despicable actions of not just this psycho but any racist shit head divide anyone.

To use our common loves as a constant reminder that we all are human beings and none of us are alone in this world. Sometimes the news cycle can make it look bleaker and darker than it is – but seeing the propaganda and history of the past one hundred years – even if we have a ways to go – we’re still heading in the right direction. Together.

Periwinkle’s Art of War: That Time Ghost Recon Accurately Predicted War

Years before I became resident pool skimmer at Paradise I considered myself a bit of an amateur, “fictional war correspondent”. Examining warfare video games retrospectively, weighing the odds of probability for fictional conflicts or double checking historical “accuracies” in games about real war long past. Or sometimes just noticing coincidences or conflicts accurately predicted like today’s entry. For those of you that could give a shit about history, don’t worry – this is a new and sporadic type series and will be few and far between (mainly because it requires one iota of research and I am just heartbreakingly lazy).

I will be back suffering, playing horrible games for your reading pleasure soon enough. But for now, since your here, join me while we briefly discuss the time Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon accurately predicted war.

So today we will cover the very first Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon game and how it predicted (down to the year) the Russo-Georgian War. But first a quick overview for those unfamiliar with the game series and writer, Tom Clancy.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon was released in 2001 for PC and ported to consoles in 2002. While the game series is one of the only games under the Tom Clancy brand umbrella not based on an actual Tom Clancy novel it still does a fairly decent job guessing a geo-political crisis in the near future.

Tom Clancy was a best selling author who more than likely has written something you’ve either read, watched or played. The Hunt For Red October was his first novel. Patriot Games, Clear And Present Danger and The Sum Of All Fears all became commercially successful films based on his novels as well.

Somehow Tom Clancy looked exactly like I imagined he would.

The Ghost Recon video game series began development in the late 90’s into the early 2000’s and unlike Rainbow Six is not based on a specific story by Clancy but just his tactical/military based body of work.

From Wikipedia:

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon is a tactical shootervideo game developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubi Soft in 2001 for Microsoft Windows. It was ported to Mac OSPlayStation 2and Xbox in 2002 and to the GameCube in 2003. Ports for N-Gage and Game Boy Advance were planned, but later canceled.[6]Unlike Clancy’s other tactical shooter series, Rainbow SixGhost Recon is not based on any of his books.

Red Storm is an American video game developer founded by Tom Clancy and his manager, Doug Littlejohns (which is one of the most ridiculous last names I’ve ever heard).

Anyways they debuted with, “Tom Clancy’s Politika” and really broke ground in 1999 with, “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six” series.

It was also published by juggernauts, Ubisoft. The Montreal based company that has also published all other Tom Clancy titles, Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, Just Dance, Rayman, Prince of Persia, Watch Dogs and many other titles.

Ghost Recon takes place in the near future (at the time) 2008. An ultra nationalist groups seizes control of Russia displacing its current democratic leaders and begins taking back land and countries lost during the soviet collapse. Russia quickly seizes Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan and declares itself the RDU (Russian Democratic Union) and sets aim on its neighboring Georgia.

“The Ghosts” are a fictional ultra elite United States military squad first called in to stop Russian backed rebels in Georgia. The rebels are South Ossetia separatists but what makes this case and game particularly interesting is the coincidence of time between the game itself and the Russo-Georgian War.

But to understand the significance of the coincidence we first have to look into the history of some of the parties involved and what better way to start than examining the modern day history of the gorgeous country of Georgia.

Georgian flag

Just south of Russia, Georgia was under Soviet control until it regained independence in 1991. Following the regained independence however a long period of political strife, bloody coup and a civil war erupted.

Noteworthy Georgians include: Joseph Stalin and the best looking chess master on Earth Sopiko Guramishvili.

Definitely NOT the best looking chess master on Earth
Guramishvili
Oh and fictional mega babe, Xenia Onatopp. Best Bond villain ever.

Considered a frozen conflict zone (Disputed conflicts and territories left over from the Cold War) Georgia has had two internationally recognized territorial disputes. One with Abkhazia and another in The northern part of the country with South Ossetia separatists. Were going to focus on South Ossetia.

In short, South Ossetians helped overtake the Democratic Republic of Georgia and in April 1922 were rewarded their own separate autonomous administration called the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast. Leading up the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgian nationalism was at an all time high during the push for independence from the USSR. Tensions flared between the sides – with Russian backed South Ossetia and Tbilisi at odds.

All a powder keg which would eventually explode in 2008 during the Russo-Georgian War. The war lasted only twelve days and is notable that it is considered the first war in Europe during the 21st century. It was also the first war to feature cyber warfare as well as traditional military means.

After almost two weeks the French negotiated a cease fire between the two sides successfully but not unlike Crimea in 2014 Russia has occupied the territory since 2008 breaking the rules set in place for the existing cease fire.

What’s the largest coincidence?

That both the conflict in the game (between Russian backed Ossetian separatists and NATO backed Georgian military) and the real Russo-Georgian war both break out in the year 2008. The game effectively predicting the conflict seven years in advance.

The one thing the game did get wrong?

That it would take a fringe ultra-nationalist political party to oust the Russian administration of 2005. The truth being – there was already a fringe ultra nationalist in office by 2005.

Steampunk? Steamball? Steamboy!

Welcome back to Paradise my dear Island guests, I am dropping the steampunk greetings because I ran out!  So instead I will go with: “Good day dear guest, welcome to another beautiful day in Paradise, today we serve you this special blend of Anime-Spritz and the Movie-to.  Two parts Steampunk with a solid dash of Katsuhiro Otomo one part Star Wars and expectedly garnished with a bit of Akira.  This review will take you through my experience with Steamboy!

Akira but with Steam

Steamboy came out in 2004 and is directed by the man the legend Katsuhiro Otome himself. He is known as the man who revolutionised anime with his iconic flick.. Akira! This movie cost 20.2 million dollars and is one of the most expensive animated movies of all time. Certainly at that time. A Blueray these days costs you about 19,90 which I assume will be the dollar price as well as you guys tend to get that stuff cheaper than us. My version at least offered me the chance to choose between sub and dub and this had me pondering for a bit.  I am a sub girl.. very much but the dub cast consists of Alfred Molina, Patrick Stewart and Anna Panquin among others and it sounds absolutely phenomenal.  However the matching lip flaps stuff isn’t done as well.  As a sub-girl I watched the movie subbed. For two reasons. Anna who plays Ray, our main character fakes a british accent, and while she does it pretty good it is a fairly thick accent.. making it slightly harder for me as a non native english speaker to understand being the most important. The second the main characters being the Steam family. In Japanese their name is not translated.. so Steam and steam .. which both appear in this movie a lot.. are more separable.  Watching the dub however I think is completely justified!

The movie tells the story of James “Ray” Steam. Son of the great Dr Edward “Eddie” Steam and grandson of the legendary Lloyd Steam. Unbeknownst to Ray his father and grandfather make an invention that can propel the world into the next age of science. The mysterious Steamball. However after a workplace accident Eddie and Lloyed now follow very different beliefs. One seemingly took the side of the Americans and the O’Hara foundation.. led  by the Child-Ojousama Scarlett O’Hara St Jones and the weasley CEO Simon. The other takes the side of Robert Stepehnson, a british nationalist and fellow inventor.  When Lloyd mails Ray one of the three Steamballs, he quickly finds himself marooned between both sides and has to fight his way out of many dangerous situations so that the true philosophy of science can survive. In doing so however war between America and Britain almost seems unavoidable as Ray quickly finds out that power corrupts. It’s a fairly interesting story that does have its flaws. With the runtime of slightly over two hours this movie outstayed its welcome just a bit. For me one of those moments happened at the 45 minute mark and the second near the end. I never would have turned it off but there were points where I was like… hmmm we are treading water a bit.

America vs Great Britain

The set piece for this movie is great. An alternative take on Britain in 1866. The concept of steam having reached its limits and people trying to break it is intriguing. The quasi science behind is that people found a liquid water-like element or material that can both solidify and turn to steam within a small margin or something..with a denser base one can cram a lot more steam in small containers and make it more productive. The money hungry Americans want it to make MONEY and lots of it while the proud british want to use it for Queen and Country and to subject those who would oppose them. One of the scientists believes that we should explore all facets of science.. even the ones that can be used for nefarious gains, it is up to humans to handle them responsibly and the other beliefs mankind can not be trusted with power like  this. Science is meant to serve man not rule over them.  Ray works as a neutral perspective; he just loves gadgets and tech and thinks a tank is really cool when he sees one. He does however think a tractor is pretty dangerous because one nearly destroyed his house.  It’s where one of this movie’s greatest strengths yet also it’s weaknesses lie. It doesn’t really choose a side… until very very late in the movie. It does keep the plot exciting and shows us some amazing steampunk tech, pretty cool utilities and wonderful locales.. yet we also see a main character that doesn’t know very well what he is fighting for or who he is running from.

I do not mind this neutral approach but they back out of it hard, at one point one side is revealed to be pretty evil.. and then near the end they are not..or they regret it and flip.. I am not sure how to explain that. A lot of characters have ulterior motives, lie about their beliefs and or change them as the movie goes along  and a two hour movie is kind of too short  to tell that.  It results in a lot of idealistic speeching to get the point across the movie is trying to make but that sometimes doesn’t make sense.. like speaking about your ideals against what is essentially your boss. Or telling a kid waaaay more than you would tell a kid. As a result some of the speeches feel a bit forced. So Ray  talks to person A, maybe he can’t be trusted, Person B explains his side, Person C tells Ray to be careful and why science should be treated with more care.. but the person is confused.. so maybe it’s person D who has the right vision..who of course also speeches. In the end they are all kind of assholes..but also not?! It’s a tad much.

When action is happening however this movie is great!  The Steampunk inventions work in a really mechanical and realistic way and a slew of interesting gadgets is pulled in. Very early Ray for example has to flee from some bad guys on his steam cycle.  It as an invention that has not fully worked yet so before he can fire it up properly he has some issues and tumbles around in the wheel (it is basically one large steam propelled wheel )  .. in  trying to flee he tries to lose them by quickly hiding behind a Steam train that is coming their way..but the way rails are designed keeps the cycle locked on track. (He had a ramp to get in before)  every scene has tiers as it were. It is not just throwing punches… it is feeling out what the problem is, finding a solution and making it happen. All the fights and action scenes are conquered by clever thinking like how a scientist would.  Yes there is a powerful mcguffin but it doesnt give power as one would in Shonen.. people almost never overpowered…except for a war going on in the background..  but the action fits the tone of this movie so much. Then there are the more comedic scenes and discovery scenes that pack so much charm.. it only has too many speeches.

Well put Together

What stood out to me most is how absolutely stunning this movie is! It looks gorgeous! This is a 2004 movie so it’s 16 years old but it looks so clean!  Yes it is really brown and grey like all steampunk movies and most period pieces, yet the movie knows when it is enough and treats you to a beautiful coloured scene as well.  The details look amazing and this might be the only movie where I do not mind that they used 3d graphics in a 2d movie. It blands in so well and gives everything “mass” Wind effects, steam effects they all look SOOOO great in this movie. I am not a big visual type of person but this , this wowed me! It looks 80’s in design , quite close to Akira but  with all the commodities of modern animation. I would not describe it as realistic.. but just by looking at it you can add adjectives to every item. The heavy lever, the creaky crank. Just by looking at some parts you know how much force you would have to use to  pull it down or make it move. Pipes twist shapes from having too much pressure little glass cracks from shockwaves nearby. Ray’s aviator goggles shatter after his first crash landing.. there are so many small details

The characters are also great. Scarlett O’Hara St Johnson, who is indeed based on the character from Gone with the Wind for example seems like your typical Oujousama , she feels too good for everything.. she is super shallow but rather than having her completely overcome this it is because of said shallowness she discovers some of her beliefs or some stuff her company does doesn’t work for her.  Per example.. she talks to a person she has warm sentiments for seeming worried.. however once she founds out it will give her less money .. she thinks of him as a bad element.. influencing something else she likes..  She really wants to keep that..so her mind finds a way to explain how she can have her way.  Later on however she sees one of her machines is causing destruction.. the CEO spins it to her as a marketing tool.. so people can see what they will buy! She is against this however because she doesn’t want the “pretty things” to be broken. We see growth, as in the person learns what they want and do not want and what is more important for them.. but they do not morph into a great hero who learned their lesson.

Ray and both Lloyd and Eddie get plenty of similar obstacles in their way. Ray wants to do right.. but he is very idealistic.. he isn’t in this to do right by some or to do right by the good side.. he wants to do right for all. He also believes man is good.. and those traits get him in trouble.. but he doesn’t give up on that. He stays who he is and sticks with his choices, even if that choice is not making a choice. Eddie and Lloyd also make decisions based on this and even Simon who is but a minor character can’t help but showcase his dominant character trait .. being Greed even when it endangers his life. Yes he is weasley, yes he is your typical  “snake man” archetype..  he doesn’t do the whole chickening out thing , not really at least, however he is not stupid enough to die for his greed either. Characters stay themselves rather than being a stereotypical movie role. That can lead to a few eyeroll moments, as “in other movies, the hero would have learned by now” .. but that is just the point.. these situations happen because it just so happens to be these characters that were put in this situation and I love that so much!

Soaring to the Skies

The movie does fall in the pitfall of having too many finales, the final encounter has so many tiers that it stops being interesting in the final step or so. It’s still amusing but I reached a point where I would be fine with any outcome as long as it would end.  It’s not quite “you haven’t even seen my final form” levels.. but there are definitely too many elements in the end. Reason is once again those shifting alliances and believes. What starts as Small guy versus big corporate evildoers ends up as England versus America and that ends up in..  about 8 subgroups or so each doing their own things. It makes sense.. but it all is a bit convoluted and it means some plottreats do not go anywhere. There is a big thing about scuba divers in steampunk suits but one falls off the stairs because he trips and that ends the entire thing with the Scuba divers.. We see a character be built up as super important in the conflict and at one point he just stands there and watches.. while he technically was still doing things… and of course for some reason each side has the perfect counter for the other teams surprises packed and loaded on their ships.  Air Travel is still unheard of yet  when America shows something in those veins. and Brittain goes.. what the F is that thing.. they also go like “Hey now we can test out that weapon we made in case people made such a thing we were just so utterly surprised by”  It dulls the background conflict significantly.

The action with Ray and Scarlett amidst that war is finger licking good!  The story is descent with flaws, the action only has that one bigger setback. Critics rate this movie with about a 6,6 out of 10 and a 6,9 on IMDB. However I do feel those scores are way too low.  On Metacritic this movie scores an 8.7 out of 10  from the audience and that I find is a much fairer score. I would put it slightly lower due to it’s chunky runtime and excessive speeches, which I could forgive if the finale was a BIT more on point but for a movie about the glory of science, for a movie about steampunk I could not wish for much more than what I have got.  Even after finding this movie too long I kind of want  to rewatch it dubbed sometime.. not right now , not even this year anymore but I really want to watch the dub as well at some point and that has to be a seal of approval right there. A sub-girl who liked this movie so much that she would like to see if the dub would make her appreciate it even more!

Order and Chaos 1: Welcome to Wuqu

Welcome to my very own world little Monsters, the world of my Pokémon D&D game. The world of Wuqu. Each week I will talk a bit about the more mature stories of this world of my RP campaign. It is set in a world, that never knew Pokémon, much like our own, but around the  eighties of that world, Pokémon suddenly began appearing. People saw them as monsters and began fighting them resulting in a war between humans and pokémon with many victims on both sides. Eventually mankind was driven to live underground mostly, the Pokémon destroying the world’s climate making it a barren place. The sun shone in forests at times and spots where it’s not supposed to shine, causing the trees to twist , poison types polluted the waters, and fire types created new deserts. When all seemed lost, through the Ultra Space holes that started all troubles a capsule arrived, within it, answers how to build Pokéballs, how these monsters and make them do your will. With resources running very thin, only the major corporations had enough money and means to get these technologies created. These companies banded together and formed Neo-Aether, a now totalitarian world governing institute, trading safety for servitude. No citizens of Aether are allowed to leave their own city, ever, only those selected for the Trials may prove their worth. These trials entail defeating the mayor of 8 cities in Pokémon battles, or more. Those who do so, prove they can live together with Pokémon and will be granted acces to “the safe zone” a remote island where humans and Pokemons live together in peace. Or at least that is what people are made to believe……..

Team Oblivion
However our story does not begin in the region of Wuqu in this brand new world. This adventure starts in the Alola region, one hundred years after the first champion of Alola defeated the Mother Beast. We find ourselves in a sterile white office of the Aether Foundation in Alola, time-storms have been happening recently and Pokémon have started to vanish from the world little by little. Four ominous looking people  stare at a darkened femine shape in the back off an office, sitting in a wheelchair. Their body postures reveal they are all a bit older. One dressed in mostly blue, wearing a tentacool beak as a cowl, with an eight eyed face mask speaks to the shadow. ‘Why have you summoned Team Oblivion, do you not know what we stand for?’ he speaks, his voice revealing he is clearly of high age, yet there is still a deep determination and menacing tone in his voice. He straightens his robes marked with Kyogre-patterns, then straightens his shoulders made of dead tentacools with their tentacles draping over his widely sleeved arms. The woman speaks, her voice sounding quite elegant, though the cracking in said voice also reveal she might be in poor health. ‘I know very well what your organisation stands for Abyss Prophet Luther’ she says while she moves a bit in the shadows. ‘It is why i have specifically  called you’. A second man draped in a black cloak with dark purple elements, and a white faceless mask speaks, barely visible whle in this poorly lit room, he plays with his Darkrai themed pendant and then calmy speaks. ‘How can ending the world help you then, mysterious lady’. The two other priest like figures chuckle. One is donning a bone mask with a very dark brown cloak, he is very broad and muscled, his sleeves inspired by Giratina, the eyes of his skull mask fitted with some tinted glasses in a ghostly shade of purple. Lighter than the one who just spoke.
The other is a much slimmer man, in red scaled robes,  with earthen shoulder spikes, as if inspired by Groudon, his mask also being an earthen slab with some markings similar to that on the red stone. The lady’s heads shift to the Darkrai inspired man and tells him. ‘Well glad you ask Void Prohet Nils, I need you to destroy a world, just not this one’ Even though non can see the woman’s face, all four man know there is a smile on her face,

Team Freak
The woman brushes trough her hair, letting her message sink in with the four. The large man and the slender groudon donned one seem very excitable. “Does this mean we can bring Death?’ says the large man while making a D pose. “And EXTINCTION” yells the red clad, stone masked man. ‘Yes Death Prophet  Griogri and Extinction Prophet Asmodeus, yes you can’
The woman puts on a breath mask for a short moment taking a gasp from it before continuing. ‘I need you to travel to a world on the other side of Ultra Space, we have been aware of an group of people there named Team Freak, by whatever means in that world.. they have found a possibility to breach back into our world with Ultra Space travel, but somehow they end up, back in significant places in history. They are trying to alter our timeline, so that their pathetic world is safe, in order to do so they seem to have wiped Pokémon from our timeline..so I need you to go there and destroy this world or at least that blasted organisation before it kills our world, and given your expertise you will be the right people for the job.’ The shaded figure heads them a folder giving some information, revealing a clownesque magician by the name of Sion Illu to be their leader as well as their logo. A cruel looking clowns face with swirly eyes it’s nose being a diamond of a card game as well as it’s teeth forming the word Freak.
The abyss prophet nods, speaking in a very bellowing voice. ‘You have selected the right tools for the job Aether president, we will be the scalpel that will cut away that is the cancer that you call Team Freak , if lord Kyogre favours me and my brothers, we may even be able to amputated that entire world of existence from the multiverse.’ The man forms a pyramid shape above his head.. as if spelling the letter A. ‘For the Abyss!’  Nils the Darkrai looking one, follows suit but shapes a V. ‘We will send these people to the Void’. The woman chuckles. ‘Good to see you are eager, I have a contact in that world…the world we for now shall label Chaos, A pokémon profesor unaware of my true intentions, he offered to help me in trade for some much needed supplies, I can send two of you on the trainer journey giving you easy access to the world. The two others will have to find another way out. ‘Me and Nils shall take the more cunning route and infiltrate the trainer teams, our brothers here are the less tactical ones and their talents are more suited for the more hands on approach’ says the group eldest. ‘Very well then so it shall be’ replies the woman.  ‘Follow my assistant at the end of the room, they will send you to your location.’
Following their new employee’s orders they follow a man clad in white to a sterile looking room, some strange sounds can be heard from the ceiling. ‘Wait here and follow my instructions’ tells the employee who proceeds to move in an adjacent room behind some safety glass, taking along Grigori and Asmodeus. ‘I will drop them in at another location’ he says. ‘In order for you not to puke your guts out and collapse in an insult I need you to close your eyes right now then count back from 20.’  The man sounds sincere enough while working on some buttons. Luther and Nils don’t feel like throwing up with their masks on, so they decide to follow orders, about the time when their count reaches 3 seconds left, they can hear the sounds of the oceans and they feel their feet sinking deeper into the floor.

Welcome to Wuqu
After the count of twenty both prophets open their eyes and they find themselves on a grimey looking beach, with a derelict mall in the distance. However the beach is not normal, it’s coloured brightly neon yellow with some other colours mixed in. As they wonder about it a voice is providing an answer. ‘We painted that beach like that.. that way the Sandygasts and Pallosands can be spotted right away, they also hate the colour so they tend to stay away.’ The man walks closer, very hunched over, the man still seems of remarkable size, his hair white and long, donning a lab coat over something akin to more traditional Johto outfits, with a twist. He is using a cane to walk with on the top of it a Pokeball, Around his upper arm there is a band with a logo akin to the Aether logo of old world, but this time it has “legs” in the shape of the letter N. ‘Welcome to our wonderful world of Pokémon, welcome to Wuqu, you can call me profesor Azalea. It is nice to see such promising trainers coming to our aid to stop the blasted terrorists, they are terrorising the streets of Rathole town, quite possibly even behind that new drug that has been popping up’ Luther and Nils look at each other, intrigued by how different this world is already and follow the man as he guides them to the derelict mall. In front of the doors there are two man dressed in white, with heavy military equipment on their body guarding the door.Profesor Azalea talks with him showing him some idea and telling him that these are two guest trainers to be.  ‘Oh once you are inside this city you can not leave until you acquire the city’s gym badge. Hobbart , the headstrong Hobo is a kind soul, donating all his income to keep the Pokémon center and hospitals of this city running freely. He lives at the lowest level of this underground mall, with all the other homeless. But first you need a team.’ The priests simply nod accepting their faith and cover with some dignity , this will be interesting and this world is truly sick so it needs to be put out of its misery, is what both priests think. Once inside it’s an entirely different world.
An old woman is on a levitating wheelchair… but rather then wheels it’s operated on dead magnetise.. being made to levitate by passing a magnetic current through them with an old car battery attached to the chair sloppily. One of the poorly welded magnemite corpses falls off as the chair loses balance. Houses are no more then sizes of pop up stores, housing families in spaces not much larger than a single room. Neon lights, advertisements in a old language and new ones ..welded on top. Rattatas are trying to look for scraps of food before being clubbed by a large tattooed man. ‘Wel looks like my family will eat well tonight’ he says after picking up the two oddly shaped skull rattatas. A hologram of a twin tailed girl with long green hair dancing and singing is projected on the ceiling.
People walking with headphones on connected to a square device that plays some kind of old “cassette” like material, although with video hologram options now.  Ruffians huddling up in an ally to relieve one such music enthusiast of their gear… and most likely their life as well by the looks of it, and everyone else ignores it. Profesor Azalea  presses on and walk briskly for a man his age ignoring all the crime and awfulness. ‘This world will be better of in the void’ Nils said while shaking his head as he sees a young boy kicking a Lillipup.
The professor looks at them as he begins to speak once more. ‘All trainers are allowed to carry one active weapon, a “pair” still counts as one… if you carry a second weapon ..or more then 6 pokémon on you.. you are deemed a threat to the state and will be executed, I figure  you have already brought your own so we do not have to provide?’ Both Nils and Luther nod but the latter asks ‘More than six Pokémon do you not have a box system then?’ The profesor shakes his head and reacts in response ‘Nothing like in your world, you can drop off surplus Pokémon at the vault, so if you want to go hunt for a new pokemon and you carry six already take one to the vault preemptively, you can always swap them around and they will be send to your new location once you move. Ah we have arrived at the lab’
The professor opens a door, of  what would seem to have been an old restaurant of sorts before, some tinkered equipment can be seen in the back as he guides them towards a kitchen area that has been converted as well, heavy metal doors with numbers have replaced the coolers, and whatever store was next door has been converted to be a part of it as well. ‘Normally the new trainers will be subject to a test ..but you  use this waiting room to wait for your team members. I just hope they get here in time, feel free to use the tv in this room and take a seat.. do not break any gear though it all belongs to neo Aether… those who break Aether gear will be…’ the professor is interrupted by Luther ‘let me guess executed?’. The professor nods. ‘Your team mates should arrive shortly. My apologies for the hassle, I can not break their rules either.’ Luther and Nils nod, while Luther sits down Nils plays with the tv for a bit.  Only one channel of course, there is a movie on that channel. Three boys are walking down a railroad.

In the next episode episode, we will meet some more noble trainers, joining Luther and Nils on the Pokémon Gym challenge. Will the two doomsday priest be able to elude the group to their true intentions, will they be able to find out more about this Team Freak folks, and what atrocities does Rathole Town hold in store for our upcoming heroes? You will just have to wait and see what happens in the next installment of Pokémon Order and Chaos.
Until then, don’t go starting a dystopian corporate governance thing here..but stay  pink!
Until we read again! If you can’t wait, feel free to leave a like and a comment!
